A rocket stove is a hot burning, efficient stove that runs on a small amount of fuel. Small sticks gathered from around the base of trees, or chopped kindling are perfect rocket stove fuels. Because of natural draft, the fire burns hot enough to combust most of the smoke from the initial burn, rendering a good rocket stove smokeless. They can be made from many things. Often it's whatever is available from tin cans to cinderblocks to clay.
Our rocket stoves are made from clay, sand, and straw; a mixture called cob. Sculpting a unique face or design gives these stoves a personality. They run beautifully and cook delicious meals!
What is a rocket stove?
Why Cob?
Cob is sculptable, and so allows us to create artistic and functional pieces. There is something about cooking on one of these stoves that makes a meal magical. Simple earth, wood, and fire.
Another reason we build with cob is that it's available almost anywhere. Clay, sand, and straw are highly accessible and largely inexpensive materials to come by.
Cob rocket stoves are fairly heavy and somehwat delicate. They do better in a backyard rather than as a traveling piece. That said, we do know people who take them camping.
How do I get one?
